How Long Should Your Resume Be in 2026?
Resume length advice hasn't changed much in principle, but ATS scoring in 2026 makes the stakes of getting it wrong slightly higher than before.
The general rule
Under 5-7 years of experience: one page. Beyond that: two pages, rarely more. Executive-level resumes with extensive board or leadership history are the main exception where a third page is sometimes acceptable.
Why length matters for ATS, not just recruiters
Longer resumes dilute keyword density — the same number of relevant keywords spread across more content scores lower on relevance matching than a tighter, focused document. Length isn't just a human readability issue anymore.
What to cut first
Roles older than 10 years, unless directly relevant to the job you're applying for, can usually be trimmed to a single line or removed. Redundant bullet points that repeat the same type of achievement across roles are the next easiest cut.
When two pages is the right call
If trimming to one page means removing genuinely relevant, differentiated experience, don't force it. A clean, well-organized two-page resume beats a cramped, undersized one-page version every time.
